Areeiro Fort or Santo Amaro Fort

Santo Amaro Fort, also known as Areeiro Fort was built around the year 1659. This is a fortress of small dimensions integrated in the defensive coastal line to protect the mouth of the river Tagus, and therefore the entrance to Lisbon.

The Fort has suffered, over the years, several restoration works, and has even been the resident of the Prime-Minister after the Portuguese 1974 coup d’état (known as 25 de Abril, or the carnation revolution), yet it has always maintained its original design, apart from the exterior cement wall.
