PETER´S CAFE SPORT
Peter’s Café Sport is the most famous bar in the North Atlantic. Having first opened its doors on Christmas Day 1918, the Café Sport started life as just another bar in the busy port and city of Horta. It was in the 1950s that the yachts began once again to visit Faial and that the Café Sport began to build its unique reputation. The Café Sport, or Peter’s, as it is better known, has witnessed a continuing parade of the world’s best sailors and many famous international celebrities.
Renowned among sailors, Peter Café Sport is a must for anyone visiting the island of Faial in the Azores. Pop in for a G&T and check out the photos on the walls and gifts left behind throughout the years.
Originally called the Casa Azores, the Café was opened at the end of the 19th century by Ernesto Azevedo as a handicraft shop, but gradually began selling drinks too. Set in the port of Hortas on the island of Faial, it was the first and only point of arrival and departure of both goods and people. The café continued as a family business, with Henrique Azevedo both moving it to a different location and giving it the name of Café Sport as well as instilling it with many of its current characteristics.
Over the years ships' crews and round-the-world sailors have passed by the island, leaving behind gifts and photos at the café. Even the blue and black paint of the exterior is a reminder of the Dutch crews who befriended Henrique Azevedo in the Second World War. HMS Lusitania II was docked here at this time and the name Peter was added to the cafe when a petty officer on the ship said the young José Azevedo looked like his son, Peter.
The café moved to its current location in 1983 and the gifts and photos left by the visitors have continued to add to its renown - so much so that Newsweek once called it one of the best bars in the world. Today it is run by José Azevedo and it's not just a place to drink and rest, but somewhere to meet with the locals and play draughts and dominoes, to gather information, get a weather report or merely rest and pass the time away. The adjoining Scrimshaw Museum displays whale bones and teeth.

Arrival:
The reception pier with 58m is located on starboard of the harbour entrance.
The access to the reception’s pontoon is done through a -3,0m dredged canal at low tide.
Berthing:
The harbour has 274 berths, separated into 7 pontoons.

Approach:
The harbour entrance is nearly situated at 0.5 miles, on the east side of S. Julião beacon (Oc R 5s), with a range of 14 miles, placed on a grey prismatic tower with red dome, 41 meters high, located in the coordinates 38º40,466’N / 9º19,515’W.

Leading line:
The entrance is done with 277º course, up to the alignment of the small breakwater beacons, and then it must be corrected to SW (nearly 255º), in such a way to pass between the southern breakwater and the top of the pier breakwater (signalised with green light small beacon), at 3m altitude (Lt. 0.5s;0c. 1.0s; Lt.0.5s;Oc. 2.0s).
